Abstract

Humans live in continuous association with diverse microorganisms that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract, skin, oral cavity, respiratory system, and other body sites. These host-microbe interactions can support nutrition, barrier function, immune regulation, and protection against pathogens. At the same time, disruption of microbial communities can be associated with infectious, inflammatory, and metabolic disorders.
