Abstract

Stress is a multidimensional experience involving psychological, emotional, behavioural, and physical responses to demanding circumstances. Modern lifestyles can increase exposure to occupational pressure, academic demands, financial concerns, social expectations, and continuous digital stimulation. Yoga is a traditional mind-body practice that combines physical postures, breathing techniques, relaxation, meditation, and mindful attention. This paper examines yoga as a holistic approach to stress management, focusing on physical movement, breathing, relaxation, mindfulness, emotional regulation, sleep, healthy lifestyle behaviour, social and workplace applications, and safe integration with healthcare. Research suggests that yoga may improve perceived stress and support aspects of mental and emotional well-being, although evidence varies by population and intervention. NCCIH reports that a 2020 review of 12 studies involving 672 healthy adults found beneficial effects on measures of perceived stress, while other reviews have identified potential benefits for mental well-being.  Yoga should nevertheless be understood as a complementary stress-management strategy rather than a universal treatment. Safe practice, appropriate instruction, realistic expectations, and professional care when required are essential.
